Instructional Planning

Ask these critical questions when you are planning instruction: 1) who am I teaching?;

2) what am I teaching?; 3) how will I teach it?; and

4) how will I know the students understand?

It is imperative that teachers have clearly defined instructional objectives to share with their students. Research suggests that when teachers share objectives with their students, a number of things happen:

  1. the students become better self evaluators

  2. better evaluation occurs

  3. more efficient learning results

  4. better instruction occurs

For most states, the Common Core Standards intend to define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K-12 careers. 46 of the 50 states have voluntarily adopted the standards. Useful objectives must be student oriented; descriptive of an appropriate learning outcome; clear and understandable; and observable. (Cooper, 2014).

As novice teachers, it is imperative that you plan ahead and keep very detailed sub plans readily available at all times. Engaging lessons curb incidents of student misbehavior. Be sure to incorporate activities that address all learning styles and multiple intelligences. Use hands-on activities, manipulatives, role play, and cooperative learning.

To be successful, establish clear classroom and work routines.
